The optimum fastener for many design situations including bearing retainer application is a  staking locknut.

The nut is free spinning until it is torqued up against the mating part. Then, locking action is provided by staking the thin collar on top of the nut into a Woodruff type keyway, groove, or hole drilled into the externally threaded shaft. The specific locking position is therefore infinitely variable depending on the axial load desired.
